DADA series on Heart of Darkness
Read and discuss Joseph Conrad's short but intense masterpiece with me as your guide
Starting this Tuesday I will be running my first online Defense Against the Dark Arts course on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.
The first class will begin at 7pm est and cover pages 3 to 17 in the Penguin Classics version:
The hardest part is starting, going from 0 to 1. Even if you do not have time to read as thoroughly as you’d like, I’d recommend that you join in. I chose this novel because it is relatively short and manageable. My hope is that you will see that the only way to start building out your metaphors is to start wherever you are. I believe that everyone can classic literature and that everyone will benefit from reading classic literature. I will give you the confidence you need to “get” it, and thus you can go on to read other classics on your own.
In order to take the class I’ll ask that you sign up for my substack. We will have 5 sessions which you will be streamed via Streamyard. I’ll make a half-hour or so presentation to begin, leaving us plenty of time for questions and commentary.
8/6 p3-17
8/13 p17-37
8/20 p38-67
8/27 p68-87
9/3 p87-96
I hope you will join us. Link in a separate post.
best,
Kale
The first class is free. I will have a few slides but mostly just reading over passages and teasing out relevance.
Reach out if you have any questions.
Do you recommend a particular version, Kale?
I will be there and looking forward to it--I have a Kindle version so will do my best to ensure I'm synced up with the Penguin version.
